Barely a day goes by without Manchester United being linked with a player.
The Red Devils find themselves down in 8th place after eight games, and a sizeable seven points adrift of rivals Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool, who lead the way at October’s international break.
For the majority of the campaign to date Jose Mourinho’s men have lacked both a creative flair and ruthlessness in front of goal.
But the club’s problems in the final third could soon be solved with reports linking not one but two of Croatia’s 2018 World Cup stars with a switch to Old Trafford.
The duo in question are Ivan Perisic and Ante Rebic who both played a key role in leading Croatia to their first ever World Cup final, beating England along the way, before eventually losing to favourites France in the showpiece spectacle.
The Red Devils were linked with both players in the summer, but the club’s under-fire executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward refused to sanction a move for either star.
The Mirror now reports that Mourinho will demand Woodward sorts himself out and targets the players in the January transfer window, or there will be hell to pay.
Mourinho may be the favourite for the sack, but it was evident during United’s superb comeback against Newcastle last weekend that he has the backing of supporters, although the same can’t be said of Woodward whose job will be on the line if he fails to bring in any new recruits in the New Year.
Perisic is currently over in Italy with Inter Milan, and is likely to cost around £50m, while the winger’s fellow countryman Rebic is plying his trade in Germany at Eintracht Frankfurt, and has a price tag of around £40m.
If United shed out the cash on both stars it would send out a huge statement of intent, and if the duo could then sprinkle some of their World cup stardust, fans will be in store for an exciting second-half of the season.
