2018 Wells Fargo Championship Tips: Back Masters Champion Patrick Reed At Quail Hollow

2018 Wells Fargo Championship Tips: Back Masters Champion Patrick Reed At Quail Hollow

Next up on the PGA Tour is the 16th edition of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Golf Club, which once again stages the tournament following last year’s absence due to the PGA Championship. A catalogue of star names are on show at the Charlotte course with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Patrick Reed, Justin Thomas and Phil Mickelson bidding to come up trumps in North Carolina.

Simply put, Rory McIlroy loves the course, and he jets over to the tournament with hopes of bagging his third success, following wins in 2010 and 2015. The Northern Irishman, who has four other top-10 finishes at the Wells Fargo Championship and holds the course and tournament records, has been installed as the 15/2 favourite in the betting to win his second PGA Tour event inside the last two months.

However, McIlroy faces competition from an extremely strong field, which includes the 10/1 priced Justin Thomas who won the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow last year. The FedEX Cup leader did miss the cut at the Zurich Classic, but his form in general this season has been decent: won the Honda Classic in February, finished 2nd at the WGC Mexico, then 4th at WGC Match Play.

Man of the moment, Masters champion Patrick Reed, represent a tempting bet at 22/1. The American finished second behind Thomas at the PGA Championship, finished 12th at Wells Fargo last season, and carded T7 in his last outing at the Zurich Classic. Prior to his Augusta success Reed was a runner-up at Valspar and came T2 at the Arnold Palmer. The man is in scoring form, and will no doubt be bang in contention come Sunday.

Jason Day returns to Quail Hollow looking for revenge. The Aussie was right in contention to win his second major, only to fluff his lines on the final two holes, as he bogeyed the 17th then carded an eight on the last. Before that, he finished 9th in his last showing on the course in 2012. He could therefore be worth checking out at 20/1.

Tiger Woods - along with his new irons - makes his first appearance at Quail Hollow since back in 2012 - when he missed the cut - while this is his first event since finishing in T32 at the Masters. Unsurprisingly Woods is a former winner of the event, back in 2007, and is available at 25/1 to become only the tournament's second multiple champion.

Compatriot Phil Mickelson, who won March’s WGC Mexico, has six top-5 finishes in his last 10 appearances at Wells Fargo. Could this be the year he finally wins the event...? Lefty can be found at 25/1, while he’s 5/1 to cement yet another top-5 finish.

Elsewhere, Kevin Kisner (40/1) has two top-10 finishes in his last two appearances at the course, while in-form Ryan Moore catches the eye out at 50/1.
