England, Wales, Scotland, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland all learned their Nations League fate
18:09, 16 Dec 2021

The 2022/23 UEFA Nations League draw has been completed and England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland’s fates have been decided ahead of the third edition of the tournament.

England, who are on a quest to improve on their third-place finish in the inaugural competition back in 2018, will face Germany, Italy and Hungary. The Three Lions have been handed a tough draw in Group A3 but will have an opportunity to enact revenge against Euro 2020 final opponents Italy, who beat them in the competition’s showpiece back in July.

However, old rivals Germany, who themselves will be looking to avenge a loss this summer, will also be keen to get their vengeance over Gareth Southgate’s men, having been knocked out by them in the round of 16.

Elsewhere, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland will find themselves up against one another in Group B1, alongside Ukraine and Armenia. Northern Ireland were drawn in Group C2 and will face Cyprus or Estonia, Kosovo and Greece, while Wales, who are competing in Group A for the first time, find themselves in a tricky Group A4 alongside Poland, Netherlands and Belgium.

Wales and Belgium fans would be forgiven for being sick of the sight of each other having been drawn in World Cup qualifying, Euro 2016 qualifying and that famous quarter-final at Euro 2016.

Each team will play four group games between 2nd and 14th June, then a final two games from 22-27 September 2022. The four group winners from League A will play in the finals in June 2023. Teams finishing fourth in the groups in Leagues A and B will be relegated, while those bottom in the League C groups enter play-offs in March 2024. The two teams defeated in those ties will be relegated to League D.

Portugal and France have won the two Nations League titles to date.
