Following Jose Mourinho's departure from Manchester United, the Old Trafford board may be focusing their attentions on bringing the right manager to the club to try and turn around what has been a shocking start to the season. However, the powers above at the former Premier League champions can't take their eye off the playing staff and they must still have a plan of action for when the January transfer window opens in a couple of weeks.
With an interim manager expected to take over for the remainder of the season before a new boss is named in the summer, United as a club could maintain their current negative slump if they don't strengthen a misfiring squad in January, and we pick out THREE players that they should target before the winter window shuts.
1. Kalidou Koulibaly
Napoli's rumbustious central defender Kalidou Koulibaly had been on Mourinho's transfer radar for months as the Portuguese boss looked to strengthen his defensive options heading into the second half of the season. Despite Mourinho exiting Old Trafford earlier today, Koulibaly would be a superb addition to a defence that has conceded 29 goals in the Premier League this season, and while he would not come cheap, the Serie A giants could be willing to let him go for the right price.
2. Harry Maguire
Following England's World Cup heroics it felt like Harry Maguire was being linked to a move to Manchester United on a daily basis, but Mourinho failed to get the £50m deal over the line and was visibly upset with not being able to lure the Leicester City defender to Old Trafford. Now, Maguire's move to United appears to have quietened down after the centre back picked up an injury a few weeks ago, but he would be another superb addition to a struggling defence and they should look to bag his signature in the coming month. With the worst defensive record in the top-15 in the Premier League, United must strengthen in that area and whether it's the interim manager or the United board that sign a defender either Koulibaly or Maguire must be at the top of their list.
3. Isco
United fans have suffered in recent years and you feel the Red Devils supporters need a signing to reignite their love for the club and Spanish sensation Isco could be that man that galvanises a club on a rapid decline. Reportedly, on his way out of Real Madrid, Isco is a premier target for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City according to as.com, but if United can conjure up an audacious bid for the exciting midfielder then his signature could instantly invigorate the downbeat fan base and it could prove to be a turning point at the club.
