8 Games That Suggest Newcastle v Man United Is The Most Entertaining Match In Premier League History

1) Newcastle 5-0 Man Utd (October 1996)

Just a few months after Newcastle so spectacularly lost their grip on the Premier League title Kevin Keegan’s side were hungry for revenge when Man Utd visited St. James’ in October 1996. The Magpies were two points ahead of their rivals entering the contest and would end it with renewed optimism for the years ahead after an astonishing victory.

Darren Peacock opened the scoring and David Ginola fired home from distance before the interval, with goals from Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer, and Philippe Albert following in the second half. Sadly this was as good as it got for Keegan, whose team won just one of the next nine league matches and finished the season seven points behind Man Utd.

2) Man Utd 5-1 Newcastle (August 1999)

Four goals from Andy Cole against his old club helped United to a thumping victory in just their third game at Old Trafford since sealing the treble in 1998/99 – and helped seal the fate of Ruud Gullit. The defeat left the Magpies with just one point from their first six games of the season and made Gullit’s job untenable; it was the manner of their collapse that ensured he was relieved of his duties within 48 hours of the final whistle.

Having been level at the break, Cole scored within seconds of the restart thanks to a long ball over the top from Paul Scholes. Nikos Dabizas was sent off for protesting the goal and things quickly went from bad to worse.

3) Newcastle 4-3 Man Utd (September 2001)

Bobby Robson’s 100th game in charge of Newcastle was one of the most entertaining of the Premier League era. Laurent Robert gave the hosts the lead in the first five minutes to set off a ridiculously end-to-end contest. Newcastle were 3-1 up at half-time before Ryan Giggs and Juan Veron pulled the visitors level.

A Wes Brown own goal sealed the points for the Magpies with eight minutes left to play, and then Roy Keane capped it all off by receiving his marching orders in injury time. Newcastle went on to secure Champions League football while United finished third.

4) Man Utd 5-3 Newcastle (November 2002)

The following year saw yet another high-scoring match between these two sides as a Ruud van Nistlerooy hat-trick gave United a precious victory at Old Trafford after Alex Ferguson’s side had picked up just six points from their preceding five games.

Incredibly, there was a four-minute spell of the second half in which three goals were scored, kicked off with the goal of the game – Alan Shearer’s thunderbolt from a freekick.

5) Newcastle 2-6 Man Utd (April 2003)

For the first and only time in Premier League history Man Utd and Newcastle were involved in eight-goal thrillers twice in a single season. The latest Ferguson rout came in the middle of an extraordinary run of results for Man Utd, who didn’t lose another league match after a 3-1 defeat to Middlesbrough on Boxing Day.

Jermaine Jenas opened the scoring for the Magpies but the visitors had struck six times before the hour mark, proving beyond doubt that their purple patch wasn’t going to end before the season was out. The Red Devils won the title by five points.

6) Newcastle 1-5 Man Utd (February 2008)

The return of Kevin Keegan to St. James Park meant the return of Keegan v Ferguson, and it didn’t disappoint. Unfortunately for the hosts they felt the full force of arguably the greatest team of Ferguson’s tenure, which included Carlos Tevez, Wayne Rooney, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The visitors had slipped down to second after collecting just one point from their previous two league matches, and thus this emphatic victory was a huge psychological boost on their way to the title. Newcastle, meanwhile, hadn’t won in eight games up to this point and looked destined for the drop until a late flurry of wins dragged them over the line.

7) Man Utd 4-3 Newcastle (December 2012)

Alex Ferguson’s final game against Newcastle was arguably the greatest of all in terms of pure entertainment. The Magpies led three times but the hosts kept surging back, extending their unbeaten run in a slightly wild campaign for United.

Javier Hernandez scored the winner in injury time after a clearly exhausted Newcastle defence failed to track his run in behind. It was a truly uplifting day at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, and it was no surprise that United stayed at the summit of the table for the rest of the campaign.

8) Newcastle 3-3 Man Utd (January 2016)

2015/16 was a dreadful year for both teams, but Magpies fans could at least celebrate a magnificent comeback against their old adversaries at St. James Park. Louis van Gaal’s side were 2-0 up before goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic pulled things level. Wayne Rooney looked to have won the points with his second of the game but Paul Dummett had the final word in injury time.

Newcastle were relegated that season despite Rafa Benitez’s best efforts and things were just as miserable for Man Utd, who finished fifth.
