It’s fast becoming a week to remember for Yuan Sijun – the youngest player on the professional circuit.
The 17-year-old Chinese cueist chalked up an impressive 5-4 defeat of Shaun Murphy to qualify for the Shanghai Masters just five days ago and now he’s followed it up with a 4-1 scalp over Joe Perry in the first round of the English Open.
Yuan is competing in his rookie season on the tour after winning the Asian Under-21 Championship to earn his place.
After a slow start with just a solitary win against Allan Taylor in the first six events, he’s now made it back-to-back wins against two very experienced players.
Murphy is a former world champion of course, but Yuan hit breaks of 104, 74 and 61 to beat him in Wigan. With this triumph behind him, he played even better to beat Perry with two centuries punctuating what looked a very assured performance against another ranking event winner.
These quality showings have earned Yuan no end of praise as he’s showcased his talent with a fearless confidence
It’s hard to deny that this season is quickly emerging as one of real success for Chinese snooker – as the boom seemingly moves to the next level.
Barely a week goes past when we’re not talking about a big result for another of their crop of talented players.
Yuan has had to watch on as many of his compatriots have hit the headlines – but now it’s his time to shine and he’s doing it with a huge grin on his face (and can you blame him).
Next up for the teenager is John Astley as he looks to turn a memorable week into an outstanding one.
