Alcohol Free took the £1m Qatar Sussex Stakes by a length and a half in the feature race on day two of Glorious Goodwood for jockey Oisin Murphy and trainer Andrew Balding.

The three-time Group 1-winning filly (7/2) edged the favourite Poetic Flare (11/8), already winner of the 2000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes this season, in second.

Snow Lantern (6/1), who beat the winner when winning the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket's July Festival, came in third. The win has been a long time coming for Alcohol Free’s owner, Jeff Smith, who won this race 37 years ago with Chief Singer.

Murphy told ITV Racing, “She really can be a handful in the mornings – it can be tough work. But she’s so, so talented – and what a thrill I got from that! I’ve won this race before on Lightning Spear, and then last year it went all wrong (when fourth on Kameko).”

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Armor ran out winner of the Markel Molecomb Stakes for Richard Hannon and Ryan Moore, while 20/1 shot Last Empire, running over seven furlongs for the first time at Group 3, clinched the Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes for Kevin Ryan.

Nagano, meanwhile, claimed victory in the Unibet “15 To Go” Handicap beating 100/30 favourite Siskany by three-quarters of a length.
