What is it? The world’s richest horse race.

With a total prize pot of $16M, $7M of which will go to the winner, it has surpassed Dubai World Cup as the most valuable event of its kind anywhere in the world. In a unique format, entrant’s connections will stump up as much as $1M to get them in the gate and will be rewarded with a cut of the overall profits from the day’s takings.

Where is it? It will be held at Gulfstream Park, near the city of Miami in Southern Florida.

Who are the main contenders? 2017 Breeders Cup Classic winner Gun Runner is the 4/6 favourite to win what will be the final race of his storied career. A win would push his career prize money, which stands at $8,988,500, close to the $16M mark.

Collected, second in the Breeders Cup Classic when last seen, has been chalked up at 4/1, which makes him the second favourite.

Those fans of an overseas raider and a romantic story have to pin their hopes on Jamie Osborne’s UAE Derby winner Toast of New York, a 20/1 outsider.

He came tantalisingly close to winning a Breeders Cup following his success in the Gulf before being retired to stud. Incredibly, the six-year-old has been brought back for another crack at life as a racehorse. A warm-up run at Lingfield went swimmingly and all systems are go for this most unlikely of comeback stories.
