Boxer Amir Khan took to social media to apologise to Caitlyn Jenner after he mistakenly referred to Jenner by her birth name, Bruce, and it has had the transgender community up in arms in recent days.
Khan had been at the ESPY awards in Los Angeles, where he bumped into Jenner, but when posting an image on Snapchat the British boxing star referred to Jenner as Bruce, and was widely criticised by using Jenner's 'dead-name'
Jenner, who was the winner of the men's decathlon at the 1976 Olympic Games, has since become Caitlyn, but Khan's apology often saw him become tongue-tied as he tried to enlighten people on why he made a mistake.
Khan said, "Calling [Caitlyn] ‘Bruce’ was in regards to their sports image, as an Olympian. It’s been brought to my attention that was it was wrong regardless. Therefore I would like to apologise.”
“The reason I called Caitlyn..... called him Bruce is because I’ve been watching him from the Olympics when he won the gold medal, he was a great….. he was a hero. So obviously I remember him as Bruce. Me being an Olympian myself, an Olympic champion myself.
“So when I met him, obviously it didn’t cross my mind, so I went over, shook his, shook Caitlyn’s hand, so I didn’t mean anything by it, I don’t want anyone to think I’m transphobic [or] I don’t like transgender, I’ve got nothing against them," added Khan about this embarrassing turn of events he has found himself in.
