Amir Khan v Kell Brook: The Reason Why Blockbuster British Fight Still Hasn't Been Made

Amir Khan v Kell Brook: The Reason Why Blockbuster British Fight Still Hasn't Been Made
19:37, 16 Nov 2018

Amir Khan and Kell Brook have been dancing around each other for years but the rumours about a potential fight between the pair fail to go away.

The duo were pictured deep in discussion at ringside of the Tony Bellew v Oleksandr Usyk fight at the weekend which has given fight fans renewed hope that a deal will finally be done.

That has been the case for some time now though with the match-up failing to materialise up to this point, with both camps blaming each other for the lack of progress.

Time is running out for both men in their careers and unless the fight gets made in the first half of next year, there has to be doubts that it ever will.

Khan and Brook have both climbed the mountain to win world titles but they have taken different paths to their respective successes.

The Bolton fighter hit the headlines as an Olympic medallist at the age of just 17 and went on to taste major success stateside away from British shores but a number of crushing defeats has lead many to believe he should hang up his gloves.

Brook has done his work at home in general although he finally claimed that elusive world strap away from home, thanks to a famous win against Shawn Porter in the States back in August 2014.

The Sheffield fighter held the IBF welterweight title until losing to Errol Spence in a shattering defeat at Bramall Lane and the injuries have started to pile up for the one they call "Special K".

Fighting each other now looks like the only option for both men as they look for one last pay day but there remains a major sticking point...the weight limit.

Brook has left the 147lbs weight division behind in recent fights but Khan appears to be insisting on the fight being at the welterweight limit, with a maximum re-hydration clause of 10lbs.

In layman's terms that means that Brook would have to weight in at 147lbs the day before the fight and then tip the scales at no more than 157lbs on the day of the bout. This type of practice is commonplace for a title fight but less so when they aren't any belts on the line.

Unless this situation can be agreed, the fight isn't going to happen.

It would be foolish for both men to avoid each other though given they are both promoted by Eddie Hearn meaning it should be easy to make, in theory. The event would be a massive box office fight in the spring of 2019 but the weight issue clearly remains the sticking point in the negotiations and unless the two men find a compromise, British fight fans could be left to wonder what might have been.

Get it made lads!
