Amorim, Lopetegui & Postecoglou: Ten Managers In The Frame For The Wolves Job

We take a look at who is in contention for the Molineux hot seat
14:45, 03 Oct 2022

Wolverhampton Wanderers are on the hunt for a new manager following Sunday’s sacking of Bruno Lage.

The Portuguese coach spent just 16 months in the job, winning 16 of his 46 Premier League games in charge at Molineux and only one in the first eight league matches this season, leaving the club languishing in the bottom three.

There have been several names linked with the vacancy since the announcement, so we take a look at those who could be set to come in and steer the club away from relegation.

READ MORE:

Ruben Amorim (11/8 FAV)

Lage's compatriot Amorim is currently in charge of Sporting CP, who are seventh in the Primeira Liga. The former Braga boss would help with the contingent of Portuguese players at Wolves, and he would know Matheus Nunes having worked with him at Sporting.

Julen Lopetegui (3/1)

The Sevilla boss has a career filled with experience and he oversaw Los Nervionenses as they collected their latest Europa League title in 2020. He might be drawn to an English challenge and has been pushed for jobs on these shores before by super agent Jorge Mendes, who of course has close ties with the owners of Wolves. With Sevilla reportedly wanting to cut ties with him, this might just be possible.

Pedro Martins (5/1)

Having recently been in charge of Olympiacos, Martins guided the Greek side to three consecutive Super League Greece titles between 2020-22. It has been reported that he is a strong contender for the Wolves job.

Sean Dyche (9/1

Viewed by many as having a negative style of football, the ex-Burnley boss revealed recently that his styles are adaptable to what he has at his disposal at each club. There are certainly some talented players at Wolves and given the opportunity, Dyche could surprise many of his critics.

Andre Villas-Boas (10/1)

The Portuguese manager has been out of work since leaving Marseille in 2021. If Wolves are looking for a boss with Premier League experience, he fits the bill having been in charge of both Chelsea and Tottenham earlier in his career.

Sergio Conceicao (10/1)

The current Porto manager has been praised for how his side play football, having been an enjoyable team to watch in the Champions League last term. Given how well Porto are doing in comparison to Wolves right now, it would be a tough appointment to pull off.

Ange Postecoglou (14/1)

Celtic’s star asset right now is most certainly the Australian coach, having regained the club the Scottish Premiership title at the first time of asking in 2021-22. He implements a progressive, attack-minded style of play that is seeing him linked with a switch to the Premier League already.

Paulo Fonseca (16/1)

The current Lille boss has had several posts across his managerial career. His most fruitful tenure was with Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukrainian Premier League, where he won three consecutive titles between 2017 and 2019.

Leonardo Jardim (20/1)

The Shaban Al Ahli manager’s most prominent spell came with Monaco between 2014-18. He developed them into an exciting Champions League outfit and also guided them to the 2016-17 Ligue 1 title.

Lucien Favre (20/1)

Favre likes to play an attacking style of play, something which Wolves supporters are wanting to see their team produce. He is currently in charge of Nice, but the French side are not yet meeting their expectations as they sit mid-table. His position there might be under threat soon.
