Arsenal Teenager Reiss Nelson Scores Sensational 30-Yard Free-Kick As England U21s Extend Stunning Qualifying Record
20:17, 16 Oct 2018

Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson scored a magical 30-yard free-kick in the second half of England's 2-0 victory over Scotland, and the win for Aidy Boothroyd's men means they finishing the qualification for the European Championships unbeaten.

Goalless on the hour-mark, 18-year-old Nelson, who is currently on-loan at 1899 Hoffenheim in the German Bundesliga, stepped up to the dead-ball and duly curled it over the wall and past a diving Ross Doohan in the Scotland goal, who could only get a fingertip on the ball as it rocketed into the top corner.

Nelson was only playing in his second England U21 match, and having scored on his debut, showed that he is certainly a player for the future and having come through all the international age groups will be hoping that he can sparkle at Hoffenheim this season before potentially trying to break into Unai Emery's Arsenal side when he has gained a little more experience in top-level football.

Everton youngster Kieran Dowell netted the second goal in added time for Boothroyd's men, who end the qualification campaign on 26 points from their 10 games played, which is sensationally eight points clear of second-placed Netherlands U21.

However, tonight's clash between the two Home Nations will long be remembered for Nelson's spectacular curling free-kick, and having scored in his opening two international matches at this level will be aiming to continue to sparkle in front of goal and challenge for a place in Gareth Southgate's squad.  England's young side have now gone 35 tournament qualification matches without defeat.  That's some record!

It ended a fine few days for the England national setup, as after the Three Lions beat Spain 3-2 in Seville last night, a win for the U21s is just the icing on the cake as the players return to their clubs over the coming days.
