Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho was once a transfer target for Arsenal, Arsene Wenger has revealed.
The 18-year-old has been in sensational form for the Bundesliga leaders this season though he struggled to make an impact in their 3-0 Champions League defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.
Sancho made headlines when he chose to leave Manchester City for Germany in August 2017 after being frustrated at the lack of first-team opportunities. But speaking to BeIn Sport, former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed he had looked at signing the player when he was struggling to get first-team opportunities at the Etihad believing the pull of moving back to his hometown of London would prove hard to resist.
Wenger explained he was very confident of bringing Sancho to Arsenal but the player eventually chose to try his luck with Borussia Dortmund.
Working as a pundit on Wednesday, Wenger told beIN Sports: "I wanted to take him from Manchester City when he didn't get the games. I tried to lure him because he's from London. I tried to get him to Arsenal. He's one of the best players of his generation. He can dribble, he has the arrogance.
"There's something in there that is part of the big players. You can call it arrogance, confidence, belief; but it has to be there."
Sancho is believed to be on the summer shopping lists of several Premier League clubs but they will have to pay considerably more than thr £8million Manchester City received for the player.
