Aston Villa have confirmed that defender Diego Carlos has ruptured his achilles tendon after going off injured in their victory over Everton on Saturday.
The club have revealed that the Brazilian will require surgery and will then begin a rehabilitation programme. Manager Steven Gerrard said after the match at the weekend that they were fearing the worst as Diego Carlos hobbled off the pitch.
The 29-year-old joined Villa in the summer from Sevilla. He is one of six new players through the door at Villa Park and has so far been their most expensive acquisition under Gerrard, costing £26 million.

His injury is likely to see him ruled out for several months and it has forced Gerrard to put his scouts on red alert as he will now look to dip into the transfer market again for defensive reinforcements to cover Diego Carlos during his absence. It is believed that the club’s next transfer priority was going to be another midfielder to add to the signing of Boubacar Kamara from Marseille but it now appears that the plan has changed following the seriousness of Diego Carlos’ injury.
The transfer window closes at 11pm on September 1st, which leaves Villa just over two weeks to complete any remaining deals to bolster their squad until the window reopens in January.
