Aviva Premiership Round Up: London Irish Slump To Seventh Straight Defeat

Aviva Premiership Round Up: London Irish Slump To Seventh Straight Defeat

These are increasingly worrying times for London Irish, who slumped to the bottom of the Aviva Premiership this weekend after a seventh straight loss.

The Exiles, promoted back to the top flight at the first attempt last season, have struggled this season upon their return.

Sunday's 22-18 home defeat to Bath came a day after Worcester had leapfrogged them off the foot of the table with a 30-15 home win over Northampton.

A hat-trick from wing Bryce Heem which gave the Warriors’ their first Premiership victory of the season.

Irish’s James Marshall and Bath's Matt Banahan scored first-half tries but Freddie Burns kicked the visitors into a five-point lead at the interval.

Burns added to his two penalties, conversion and drop goal with two more penalties after half-time.

Scott Steele's late score, set up by the forwards, earned a losing bonus point but the home side fell short despite a spirited late rally which almost forced a winning try.

Irish director of rugby Nick Kennedy said: “We're disappointed to lose a close game but, at the same time, I'm really proud of the boys and the effort they put in.

“We were unlucky at times, we didn't get the bounce of the ball, we didn't get the referee's decision, but once again we finished well. We showed our heart and nearly won the game.”

Wasps are beginning to show signs of their old selves and a 40-10 victory over Newcastle Falcons was illuminated by an exhilarating three-try blitz inside the opening 13 minutes.

Dai Young’s men have struggled at times this term due to a glut of injuries but key men are returning and so too is their broken-play swagger of recent seasons.

Rugby league convert Kyle Eastmond in particular, on his first appearance for nine months after a ruptured Achilles, appeared determined to make up for lost time.

His searing break created the opener for wing Christian Wade, who swiftly added his second, before Eastmond took centre stage himself with an outstanding individual effort.

With a combination of daring footwork and searing pace, the diminutive inside centre had far too much speed for a leaden-footed Newcastle defence as he burst clear to score.

Cruelly for Eastmond, he was forced off just before half-time for a head injury assessment after bravely denying Newcastle wing Sinoti Sinoti with a fine tackle just short of Wasps’ line.

Still, the performance of the 28-year-old former Bath player on his comeback appearance was a welcome reminder of his talent.

Second-half tries from James Haskell, Gaby Lovobalavu and Josh Bassett underlined Wasps’ dominance on a day when Eliot Daly’s score set England on their way to victory over Australia and Joe Launchbury was named man of the match at Twickenham.

Newcastle’s only try came from lock Sean Robinson.

Leicester Tigers scored two late tries in an enthralling second half to defeat Sale Sharks 35-27 at Welford Road and seal their sixth Premiership win in succession.

Ben Curry scored the first try for Sale before seeing yellow for collapsing a maul that led to a Tigers penalty try.

Mark Jennings and Leicester prop Ellis Genge swapped tries before Marland Yarde went over on his Sale debut.

Jono Ross put Sale into a 27-23 lead after the break before Gareth Owen and Nick Malouf both touched down to seal an impressive comeback for the hosts.

Jonny Hill's two tries helped Exeter overcome an error-strewn performance to beat Harlequins 31-17 at Sandy Park and return to the top of the Premiership.

Hill crossed twice in the second half to earn a bonus-point win, but Quins led at half-time with tries from James Chisholm and Tim Visser.

On Friday night, Gloucester beat Saracens 23-17.
