Barcelona have agreed to keep hold of one of their key midfielders, Sergio Busquets as he agrees an improved contract as vice-captain of the Blaugrana. The Camp Nou chiefs felt it was imperative to keep Busquets at the club, with apparent interested growing from PSG for the world-class holding midfielder.
Although the Spaniard was not due to sign a new contract having renewed in September 2016, Barcelona wanted to confirm that they would not lose a man who has been pivotal to the success of their midfield for almost a decade.
Although the new and improved contract does not see Busquets extend his stay at the club, it does give him a bigger wage and raises his buy-out clause. This stood at €200m but has now been raised to €500m, the same as right-back Sergi Roberto, who signed a new deal back in January.
June 2021 is when the deal runs until however, the club do hold the option to extend the current deal to 2023, if that suits them. In terms of wage, Sergio Busquets now joins the second tier of the pay bracket, beneath Lionel Messi who is the top paid player at the club.
This puts to bed the rumours of an exit for the midfielder who has won the World Cup and two European Championships for his county. He will be hoping to add to the Seven La Liga titles and three Champions League titles he has scooped for his club in the coming years under this new deal.
