With the January transfer window about to open, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is reportedly eyeing up reinforcements to bolster his squad and push on for a solid top four finish.
The Premier League may be looking unattainable with Liverpool’s rampage but the Blues are well within the mix for a Champions League spot in the following pack of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, on 40 points .
To aid their campaign - as well as in the Europa League - Sarri is said to be interested to procuring Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels who is available for £30million after falling out of favour with manager Niko Kovac.
Hummels, once considered the best centre-back in the world and now purely sporting a very dodgy Flanders-esque moustache, has had to contend with sitting on the bench frequently this Bundesliga season, amid reports there are concerns about the 30-year-old’s pace.
The Sun reports that Sarri has informed Chelsea Sporting Director Marina Granovskaia that a centre-back is his number one priority, with the experienced Hummels fitting the bill.
The current Chelsea defence has usually seen David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger partner up, with questions persisting of either’s ability to continue to provide the stability and reliability required at the top level.
Matts Hummels has been part of the Bavarians set-up since 2016, after being one of a number of players to make the controversial move from Borussia Dortmund in recent years.
He has gone on to record a century of appearances for Munich, popping up with seven goals and eight assists and has won back-to-back Bundesliga titles to add to the pair he gained with Borussia Dortmund in 2010/11 and 2011/12.
Should the defender try and ply his trade with the Blues in the Premier League he will no doubt come against former Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp, whose Liverpool are currently flying high at the top of the table.
