Beware Manchester United - Barcelona Star Lionel Messi Can Extend His Stunning Record Against English Teams
Manchester United will face Barcelona in the Champions League once again, after facing off in the 2009 and 2011 final. Of course, Barca came out on top in both of those games leaving Sir Alex Ferguson baffled in Rome and at Wembley two years later. Barca’s star man, Lionel Messi, scored one goal in both of those finals and he will be looking to extend his incredible record against Premier League sides.
Messi has never scored at Old Trafford, playing just one game there in 2008. Barca lost that semi-final 1-0 on aggregate and United went on to lift the trophy, beating Chelsea on penalties in the final. Messi will be hoping to alter that particular stat this month as he takes his side to Manchester but his record against English teams is nothing short of incredible.
No player has scored more Champions League goals against English teams than Lionel Messi. He has hit 22 goals against Premier League sides in the competition, making English sides his favourite to play in the tournament. In comparison, he has scored 16 goals v German teams, 12 against Italian sides and 10 against Dutch opponents.
When we break down those goals he has scored against English sides, his favourite opponent is Arsenal. This will as no surprise to those of us who watched Messi spank four goals past them back in 2010 and he has routinely torn them apart in over the past decade.
Next up are recent opponents Man City. Messi has scored six in six games against them and there could be a massive meeting in the Champions League final, between Messi and his former boss Pep Guardiola.
Chelsea avoided Messi’s wrath for some time but he has now hit three goals past them putting them third on the list. The Argentine came up against Spurs in the group stage twice this season, putting in a masterclass at Wembley, scoring a brace, which put the Catalans top of the group.
In comparisons to other top players, Messi has left Cristiano Ronaldo for dead in this regard hitting 22 goals to Ronaldo’s 12 against English sides. After that, Thomas Muller has scored nine goals, with Samuel Eto’o on eight, along with Edinson Cavani.
Cristiano Ronaldo, including in all competitions in his career has scored 31 goals against the current top six teams in English football. This includes his six seasons in English football with Manchester United and also does not factor in the fact that Manchester City were a bottom half Premier League side when he was playing in the top flight in England.
Old Trafford will get to witness the best player in the world at the peak of his powers, whether they can stop him is another matter.
