Breaking Down The Magnificent Milestone As Manchester City Hit 100 Goals For The Season

They may still be second in the league behind Liverpool in their quest to retain the title for a successive season (for the first time in their history), but the Manchester City swashbuckling has continued from their rip-roaring record breaking 2017/18 campaign.

With their 3-0 win over rock-bottom Huddersfield Town at the John Smiths Stadium in the last gameweek, the Cityzens recorded their 100th goal for the season. We’re only in January!

Manager Pep Guardiola has since spoken out about the milestone as well as their pursuit of the Premier League title, in the aftermath of their latest victory;

“We’ve scored a lot of goals. So far, so good,” the Spaniard stated (per The Telegraph).

“One team has been better but we’re in January and there’s many more games to play. You don’t win or lose the Premier League in January. We have to focus on what we have to do. If Liverpool win, we have to win. And if Liverpool lose then we also have to win.”

To reach a century, the forward two of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus have been the most significant contributors, as one would have expected. The Argentine stalwart and the Brazilian up-and-comer have both registered 14 goals apiece.

Raheem Sterling is close behind with 12, and finds himself in the running with teammate Aguero to pick up the Premier League Golden Boot (10 goals in the domestic league apiece). They’re both currently six behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

Leroy Sane has made good on the PFA Young Player of the Year award he picked up last year alongside City’s third Premier League title. The 23-year-old German has 11 goals and a squad high 10 assists for the season so far.

There have been 17 unique scorers from the City squad to get to 100 across 34 games, with three contributions by opposing players.

Southampton have significantly assisted that century, with two own goals in their two matches against the Blues; a Wesley Hoedt o.g to open a 6-1 rout of the Saints on 4th November at the Etihad, and James Ward-Prowse putting it into the back of his own net with the return trip at St. Mary’s in City’s last game of calendar year (30th December). The other own goal to add to City’s tally came from Terence Kongolo to make it 6-1 for City against the Terriers on 19th August at the Etihad.

Man City have suffered just four losses this season; once in the Champions League in their opening game - at home - to Olympique Lyonnais on 19th September (2-1), 2-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge (the second time they have failed to score in a game this season following a 0-0 draw with title rivals Liverpool at Anfield), and back-to-back losses to Crystal Palace (2-3) and Leicester City (2-1) to compound a relatively miserable December.

Since the loss to the Foxes, however, Man City have decimated every single opposition to be unfortunate to walk into their path, recording six straight victories, scoring an eye-watering 27 goals, with only five in reply. That’s an average of 4.5 goals a game.

Manchester City’s next game is the second leg of their League Cup semi-final against Burton Albion (who they smothered 9-0 ten days ago), and then their FA Cup fourth-round tie at home to Burnley.

In 2017/18, Manchester City scored 143 goals in all competitions.
