Three Britons have made it into the first qualifying round of the 2018 Miami Open at Crandon Park.
22-year-old Cameron Norrie, who was born in and previously represented New Zealand, went through after his opponent, Stefan Kozlov, retired when the Macedonian-born American was down by a set and losing 2-0 in the second. Norrie is ranked a personal best 105 and looks to make up for his disappointing exit earlier in the month in the Round of 128 at Indian Wells.
Similar to Norrie, British number four Katie Boulter had to get past an American. She beat Taylor Townsend from Chicago, Illinois, 7-6 (7-1) 6-2. Her compatriot Heather Watson, the British number two, competes later today against Brazilian, Beatriz Hadad Maia.
Stockport’s Liam Broady reached the quarter-finals of the St. Petersburg Open in September before being defeated by Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumhur. In Key Biscayne, he won in straight sets against Switzerland’s Henri Laaksonen to enter the next round and will play Filip Peliwo of Canada on Tuesday evening.
Both Women and Men’s British Number 1s, Johanna Konta and Kyle Edmund, directly enter in the second round of the tournament. Konta is defending the title, after she beat Caroline Wozniacki last year. Konta is seeded eleventh in the competition and will play either Kirsten Flipkens or Mihaela Buzarnescu, who are on Court 2 this evening.
Edmund, who is ranked 50 in the world, has not won since the Australian Open where he reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by Marin Cilic.
