Caroline Wozniacki has won the Australian Open, beating Simona Halep in a thrilling final.

The Danish star won 7-6 3-6 6-4 to secure her first Grand Slam title and take her to number one ranking in the world.

She becomes the first Dane to win a Grand Slam title and she did so after a grueling encounter in searing heat. This was the 27-year-olds 43rd attempt at winning a major event and she showed grit and determination to do so in style.

The first set was a battle right from the very start with both players looking confident on their serve and applying pressure onto their opponent. The tie-break always looked like the likely outcome and so it turned out. Wozniacki found an extra gear during the decider however, and ramped up the pressure on the world number one. She played some stunning points and ran away with the tie-break in the end, winning it 7-2.

Halep showed her class and fight in the second set, however, biting back with a vengeance as both players tired with the heat. The air temperature was above 30 degrees Celsius for most of the day and the on-court temperature was much higher. This didn't stop Halep however as she broke the Dane to secure the second set 6-3 and level the match.

So to a final set we went and it as the Dane who came out on top. She needed a medical timeout but one break was enough as she won the final set 6-4.

"This is a dream come true. I am shaking. It's very emotional. This is such a special tournament." She said after the match. "I want to congratulate Simona. I know today is tough and I'm sorry I had to win, but I am sure we will have many matches in the future.
