Football pundit Chris Sutton has blasted Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for his role in Germany’s shock 2-0 defeat to South Korea which saw them eliminated from the World Cup. The German shot-stopper was playing the sweeper keeper position throughout the game but as Germany went 1-0 down and were chasing a goal, he started playing in midfield, with two defenders behind him.
This bold move from the keeper, something we have rarely seen in the modern game, completely backfired as Hueng-Min Son loitered on the halfway line and then raced onto a long ball and tapped the ball into the net to seal the World Champion’s fate.
Sutton is well known for having strong opinions but the Celtic legend ripped into the Bayern Munich goalkeeper for his role in Germany’s capitulation. On BBC Radio 5 Live he said:
“Manuel Neuer you are a disgrace. What is he doing?! He’s playing left wing! He’s the goalkeeper, push one of your centre halves forward! Why is he playing in that position? Ridiculous decision, one long ball - Son, an open goal, he can’t miss, Germany, you’ve got what you deserve!”
Germany exit at the group stages of a World Cup for the first time since 1934 and are the third consecutive reigning champions to exit at the group stage in the following tournament. This comes after Italy, the 2006 champions, capitulated in 2010 and Spain, the 2010 Champions flopped in Brazil!
