The January transfer window has creaked open and Chelsea appear to be wasting little time in getting their business done as they are in the mix to sign Christian Pulisic, while they are odds-on to sign a Serie A striker.
Bookmakers have gone 8/13 for Gonzalo Higuain to be at Chelsea when the January transfer window closes and his arrival could well spell the end of the road for Chelsea's misfiring forward Alvaro Morata, who has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.
Higuain is contracted to Juventus currently but he is in the midst of a season-long loan with AC Milan, and a move to Chelsea could suit all parties.
Higuain has struggled for form this season, scoring eight goals in 20 appearances in all competitions, and the 31-year-old would surely jump at the chance to join up with manager Maurizio Sarri again as the pair flourished during their time together at Napoli.
The 31-year-old scored 38 goals in 42 games for Sarri and it was a sensational 2015/16 that saw him score 35 goals in 36 Serie A games which saw him earn a move to Juventus the following summer. However, there is a feeling that the Argentine striker is on the wane as his league goals tally for the past three seasons reads 24, 16 and eight.
Higuain has been forced out of Juventus by the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo last summer and being reunited with Sarri at Chelsea could be what sparks a return to form.
His arrival at Chelsea could see Morata move to AC Milan as the Blues seem happy to let him move on. Morata has scored just seven goals in 22 appearances this term, averaging a goal every 190 minutes.
Chelsea's talisman, Eden Hazard, has struggled to strike up a relationship on the pitch with Morata and the Belgian prefers playing with Olivier Giroud, despite Giroud's paltry return of five goals in 22 appearances.
It will be interesting to see if Higuain could provide the spark that will take some pressure off the shoulders off Hazard, who has carried the goalscoring burden of Chelsea for too long.
Manchester United are 6/1 to sign Higuain (Bet Victor), although it is their Premier League rivals from London who appear to lead the race to sign the forward. Could it prove to be an inspired signing as the Top-Four Finish betting continues to hot up?
Imagine if they actually had a striker who could score
