It's almost Cheltenham Festival week! A whole four days of jumps racing are coming your way and thousands of punters will head to the Festival looking to win big. We have got you covered with all the favourites, outsiders and tips you need this week - but what about those numbers? Let’s get stuck in, starting with the most important thing - the food and drink!

 

The Food and Drink

  • 45,000 bread rolls

  • 45,000 afternoon teas 

  • 25,000 hot dogs and burgers

  • 220,000 pints of Guinness

  • 18,000 bottles of champagne

  • 125,000 pints of lager

  • 30,000 bottles of wine

  • 40,000 hospitality guests served over the four days of The Festival

  • 350 chefs 

  • 9 tonnes of potatoes 

  • 5 tonnes of smoked and fresh salmon 

  • 3,800 catering team operating the event every day

  • 8 furlongs of temporary bar counters

  • 45,000 hospitality meals

  • 9,000+ gallons of tea & coffee

The Track 

  • 5,000 bundles of birch are used every season to make the fences

  • 28 Jumps races are run at The Festival

  • One full circuit is 5,331 metres long

  • 22 fences are jumped during the Cheltenham Gold Cup

  • There are five feature races run during Cheltenham, including the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase and Unibet Champion Hurdle.

  • The shortest distance raced at The Festival is two miles

  • The most wins by a jockey in one year at The Festival is seven by Ruby Walsh in 2016, while he holds the all-time record for wins with 59.

  • The most consecutive victories by a horse in any Cheltenham Festival race is 6 as Quevega won the Mares’ Hurdle between 2009 and 2014.

The Money

  • The prize money available totals over £1,000,000 per day

  • £625,000 was the prize money available for the Cheltenham Gold Cup alone

The Punters

  • 134,600 people will use Cheltenham Spa train station

  • £600,000 will be bet at the racecourse

  • 80,000 used the shuttle bus service between the Racecourse and town centre

  • 36,500 vehicles parked over the four days

  • 100 helicopter movements per day

  • 30 extra flights put on by Ryanair on the Dublin to Birmingham route during this period (20,000 customers will use Ryanair)

Other Titbits 

  • 2001 – Despite the Covid-19 outbreak, this remains the only year, besides the periods during the two World Wars, that The Festival has been cancelled. This was due to Foot and Mouth disease. 

  • 1000 – members of the press accredited for The Festival each year

  • 250 - number of rails bookmakers on site each day
