Day Three of The Greatest Show on Turf is behind us. With just one day of exhilarating racing left, Cheltenham Festival is nearly in the books for another year. But the third day of the 2023 edition delivered plenty to savour.
Stage Star stunned heavy favourite in the Novices’ Chase. The day’s opener kicked off a bit of a day-long tradition of surprise results. While Good Time Jonny’s fine showing to pip Salvador Ziggy and Mill Green to the Handicap Hurdle was not seismic, Sire Du Berlais’ victory in the Stayers’ from 33/1 was a mighty shock.
The final race of the day saw the novel sight of Jack Andrews, all 6’4 of him. The unofficially crowned “tallest jockey in the world” was riding Anightinlambourn in the Amateur Jockeys' Chase Handicap, but was unable to make an impact on the 20/1 shot. The Ben Pauling-trained nine-year-old pulled up before the race’s conclusion.
