It was an afternoon to forget for Bath Rugby's Freddie Burns in the Champions Cup as having missed a penalty in front of the posts in the closing minutes of the game the former England international's day got even worse. Having broken through the Toulouse defence he was nailed on to score the match-winning try, but with the score at 22-20 to the French side, Burns elected to take his time in grounding the ball and it was duly swiped out of his hand, which resulted in Toulouse winning.
Burns' mistake when missing a penalty appeared to have been forgotten when he went over the whitewash, but as the 28-year-old arrogantly blew a kiss at the Bath supporters it gave Toulouse's Maxime Medard a golden opportunity to knock the ball out of Burns' hands and the ball went over the dead-ball line.
Burns instantly knew he had messed up as he stared into the turf as the celebrations from Bath supporters quickly turned into despair, and after the video referee adjudged that Burns failed to get the ball down then the scores remained at 22-20 to the French visitors.
To make matters worse for the Bath back, he was replaced for the closing minutes of the game, and he will have to deal with watching the harrowing replay for days to come, as what had looked like a battling win for Bath would turn into a nightmare defeat in what was a huge game in their opening Champions Cup tie.
