Cole Palmer is reportedly set to be allowed to leave Manchester City on loan next season as the treble winners attempt to acclimatise him to the demands of senior football.

Palmer made 25 appearances for City in 2022-23 and passed the threshold to collect winners medals for their historic treble achievement. Of those 25 games he played, he made just nine starts and only mustered two goal involvements.

It is believed that he hasn’t impressed as much as the coaching staff would’ve liked and they feel that a loan away could really help him in his development. There are thought to be several Bundesliga clubs interested in taking him on and you can guarantee that many Championship clubs will be fighting to secure his services too.

This could appeal to both Pep Guardiola and Palmer due to the success stories of the following loanees who excelled in the Championship last term.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis

Young centre-half Taylor Harwood-Bellis really came into his own last year as he won the Championship title with Burnley. It looked as though learning from City legend and Clarets boss Vincent Kompany really helped take his game up another level. The defender is wanted by Kompany at Turf Moor in the Premier League next term which would be another step towards breaking into the City first team.

Nineteen-year-old Callum Doyle is another central defender who gave a good account of himself in the Championship in 2022-23. He was a key figure in Coventry City’s run to the play-off final and his contributions for the Sky Blues will certainly gain him a lot of attention this summer for another loan move. The England U20 star is tipped for a huge future and we can already see why.

James McAtee

James McAtee spent last season with Sheffield United, who were promoted automatically. The 20-year-old midfielder has really benefited from his stint with the Blades having featured 37 times in the league, scoring nine goals and providing three assists. It has been reported that his form in Sheffield has impressed Guardiola and he wants McAtee around the first team next term. This gives Palmer a glimpse of what his future could look like in a year’s time.

Tommy Doyle

Midfielder Tommy Doyle joined McAtee at Bramall Lane for 2022-23 and he was also a mainstay in United’s promotion-winning side, playing 33 times in the league and registering seven goal involvements. He may not have been as influential in the side as McAtee, but he has certainly developed as a player from this experience and certainly left a lasting impression in S2.
