Colombia Prove They Are Capable Of Upsetting The Favourites In Russia

As a Messi-less Argentina were demolished by Spain, and Brazil exacted a little revenge in Germany, just over the border Colombia were upsetting one of the World Cup’s favourites.

The headlines were all about France when they surrendered a two-goal lead before losing 2-3 to Colombia, but French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was quick to compliment the South Americans: ‘They probably have a less-talented squad than us but they are a real team.’

Few would argue with that. Whilst the French side is overflowing with stellar talent, including three of the four most expensive players of all time, Colombia work as a team to help it's fewer world-class individuals to thrive.

Indeed, their fightback in Paris was reminiscent of the free-scoring performances of their quarter-final run in Brazil, and a reminder of why they may be the tournament’s dark horses.

Having conceded two in 26 minutes, Colombia’s Luis Muriel began to unsettle the French defence with his fierce pace, and his cross caused mayhem in the 6-yard-box before ending up in the net. With France knocked off their stride, Colombia continued to pressure and James Rodriguez provided a delightful cutback for Radamel Falcao’s equaliser. Samuel Umtiti’s tired challenge five minutes from time allowed substitute Juan Quintero to win the match from the spot.

English audiences will remember Falcao for his lacklustre performances in the Premiership, but he has been revitalised at Monaco and will lead Colombia out as their captain this summer. Backed by Muriel’s outstanding pace and the creativity of Rodriguez, this is a Colombian side capable of terrorising the very best defences.

Since 2014, manager José Pékerman has also welcomed the emergence of Spurs centre-back Davinson Sanchez, whose confidence in defence defies his 21 years of age. Whereas Colombia delighted in attack four years ago, they are now a much stronger unit in defence. They are certainly capable of more upsets like this one in Russia.

England fans with a World Cup calendar will also have kept a close eye on Colombia’s friendlies - should England survive their own group they’re likely to go up against either Colombia or Poland, the likeliest qualifiers from a group completed by Senegal and Japan - no sterner challenges than France.

The idea of Muriel, Falcao and Rodriguez coming up against Stones and Jones is certainly daunting, whilst the Colombians will be desperate to go one better than in Brazil by reaching the semi-finals.

As for Poland, they boast the world-class talents of Robert Lewandowski, and so England’s defence may have it difficult either way. However, with Poland losing 1-0 to Nigeria before registering a shaky 3-2 win over South Korea, they are probably still the preferred option.

As the South Americans will be favourite to top their group, England may have to do the same if they wish to avoid them in the second round. It’ll take something special to stop this very strong Colombia side.
