Could They Do It? Tottenham Can Break Incredible Premier League Record Against Newcastle

This week we were treated once again to the maelstrom of frenetic transfer speculation, ultimately unfulfilling, leading up to the closing of the January window, broken up with an astonishing set of midweek results that mercifully shook up the Premier League.

Tottenham Hotspur came away with all three points at home to Watford, coming from behind to win for their second consecutive league match. The Lilywhites are now just two points off Manchester City in second, and still well within the mix in the title race.

After being ploughed out of a place in the League Cup final thanks to Chelsea, and the humiliation at the hands of Crystal Palace in the FA Cup, Spurs fans can savour their three game league winning streak, which they can extend at Wembley this Saturday lunchtime when they welcome Newcastle United.

However, interestingly, victory or defeat this weekend would see Tottenham set a new Premier League record of most consecutive games without a draw.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are currently tied for the dubious title with Bolton Wanderers, who set a 28-game streak across the tail end of the 2010/11 and first half of the 2011/12 season.

Spurs started the New Year in emphatic fashion, swiping aside Cardiff City 3-1 to mark a quarter of a century of games since they last shared points. Spurs have suffered defeat six times so far - more than any other side in the top six - with losses to Watford, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Wolves, and, most recently, Manchester United. Out of the 24 fixtures played so far, Spurs have won a joint-second highest 18.

History supports Spurs’ failing to get draw and subsequently claiming the status from Bolton this weekend; none of Spurs' last 20 Premier League games against Newcastle have ended as a draw. That’s 12 wins for Spurs, and eight for Newcastle United.

It may not be a record to brag about, but it’s certainly one that will get Spurs in the record books.
