Derby County’s Mason Bennett Scores Once In A Lifetime Goal Of The Season Contender

Derby County’s Mason Bennett Scores Once In A Lifetime Goal Of The Season Contender
12:09, 06 Mar 2019

This is one of the best goals you will see this year, without a doubt. Mason Bennett may not yet be one of the biggest names in world football but he has scored a goal that will surely make the shortlist for the Puskas award for 2019.

With Frank Lampard’s Derby County side 1-0 down at home to Wigan and their play-off hopes hanging by a thread, Bennett produced one of the most ridiculous finishes you will see. The ball came in from the left-hand side and some he twisted his body to get a flick onto the ball and it rocketed into the corner of the goal, past the helpless Jamie Jones.

Derby went on to win the game 2-1 which leaves them level on points with Bristol City, who occupy the final play-off place in the Championship. Manager Frank Lampard compared the goal to Gareth Bale’s unreal overhead kick against Liverpool in the Champions League final.

 The former England man said:

"Mason's strike was incredible and I was saying the last time I felt like that at a game was the Champions League final when Gareth Bale scored the overhead kick.

"I think that goal was similar in terms of the adjustment at the last second and to score from an impossible angle is a special goal for Mason and he should savour it.

"Some cynical people will say he didn't mean it but I think he certainly did, the intention was there and his adjustment in the millisecond made that goal possible."

Social media went wild for the goal as you can see down below:

‘Not even Bielsa saw that one coming’ @Grahamaccounts1

‘Most underwhelming commentary to one of the finest goals scored in recent times!’ @KevTwine86

'And If that was Messi or any big name they be calling it best goal of the year but it’s only a young derby player’ @Simon619Dunn
