Dereck Chisora was staring down the barrel of his ninth career loss against Carlos Takam last night but pulled a remarkable late knockout to turn around his fortunes in the fight and, perhaps, the 34-year-old Heavyweight’s career prospects.
The Cameroonian-French fighter Takam had dominated the early rounds of the bought in London’s 02 arenas, persistently tagging Chisora with left hooks in an attritional battle.
The Londoner, seemingly thriving on the raucous home crowd, refused to be bowed his opponent despite being outboxed at times and, coming into the ninth round, unleashed a barrage of right-handed attacks on Takam that would ultimately end his night early.
Chisora, who lost a split decision against Dillian Whyte last time - who himself would later beat Joseph Parker by decision in the night’s main event - has put himself back into the conversation in the newly-lucrative division.
His promoter, Eddie Hearn, raised the prospect of a big-money bought with the big-hitting, undefeated American slugger Deontay Wilder when speaking after the bout.
“I’d like to see Chisora fight Wilder, why not,” he told iFL TV.
“Wilder doesn’t want to fight Dillian Whyte because he’s scared to lose.
“Maybe he thinks he’ll beat Chisora. I’ll make him an offer, we’ll do it in America, he needs a fight.
“I’ll offer him Whyte and Chisora. You can’t ignore me. You may think I’m a ***** and you may hate me, but if I’m overpaying you and putting you on nights like this, no one puts on nights like this.”
