Dillian Whyte could face a tough heavyweight test in October, Jake Paul is helping to make a women’s superfight and Teofimo Lopez is refusing to give Vasyl Lomachenko a rematch. Here are five boxing stories you might have missed.
Dillian Whyte vs Otto Wallin Set For Oct. 30th
WBC interim heavyweight champion Dillian Whyte is set to fight Otto Wallin on October 30th at the 02 Arena.
Wallin represents a formidable challenge for ‘the Body Snatcher’ and it’s a commendable fight for the Brixton man to take. Wallin, 30, has only tasted defeat once in his 23-fight career, a unanimous decision loss to Tyson Fury two years ago this week, although the Swede certainly gave ‘the Gypsy King’ all he could handle. The Sundsvall southpaw left two gruesome cuts over Fury's right eye, and it appeared the fight could be halted but Fury rallied to win on the scorecards.
Wallin’s last outing was a wide point’s win over former title-challenger Dominic Breazeale, while Whyte is coming off a sensational fourth-round knockout win over Alexander Povetkin in Gibraltar
Jake Paul In Talks With Eddie Hearn Over Making Serrano vs Taylor Fight
YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul says he is involved in talks with promoter Eddie Hearn to stage a title bout between his friend and training mate Amanda Serrano, a seven-weight champion, and Hearn’s client, Katie Taylor, the undisputed women’s lightweight world champion.
“We’re excited to announce that we’re going to be working with Amanda Serrano, who is one of the greatest female pound-for-pound fighters of all time,” Paul told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour.
“We are actively in talks with Eddie Hearn, and Most Valuable Promotions, which is my promotional company, to try and figure out Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor, to make it like the biggest women’s fight of all time.”
Teofimo Lopez Says There’ll Be No Rematch With Lomachenko
Unified lightweight world champion says there’ll be no rematch with former foe Vasyl Lomachenko, as the American now has his eyes on undisputed light-welterweight champion Josh Taylor.
Lopez shocked the world by sealing an impressive points win over Lomachenko to unify the IBF, WBA and WBO belts last year.
"He's fighting my leftovers, trying to redeem himself,” he said of the Ukrainian on Sky Sports.
"It's cute that everyone thinks he's going to get me again. The way I look at it now? We're past that. We're looking at bigger and better things, like Josh Taylor.
"There will be no rematch. Had I lost, they would have never given me the opportunity, so I'm not doing it."
Lopez defends his titles against mandatory challenger George Kambosos Jr in New York on October 4th.
Terence Crawford vs Shawn Porter Set For November
WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford will meet former two-time belt-holder Shawn Porter on November 20th.
The unbeaten ‘Bud’, who is considered one of boxing’s pound-for-pound best, is fighting for the first time since stopping Sheffield’s Kell Brook in four rounds last November and will be making the fifth defense of the 147lbs title he won from Jeff Horn in 2018.
Porter last entered the ring in August 2020, posting a twelve-round shutout against Sebastian Formella. Eleven months before that win, he dropped his WBC welterweight strap to Errol Spence Jr.
"I'm very excited," Crawford told ESPN. "Now I can show my talent and maybe I can show something for the general public, something that they've never seen before. Because I don't believe that I've showed them my best yet."
Dereck Chisora Joins Anthony Joshua’s Management Company
Dereck Chisora has signed up with 258 MGT, the management company owned by Anthony Joshua.
“The game is still the same just with the new management team," Chisora said. "Looking forward to doing good business with 258. War Chisora!"
258 MGT managing director Freddie Cunningham said, "Derek has vast experience of the game and has seen the whole industry from the front-line. We are just really happy with all that experience. He feels the 258 team can add to what he is doing. We are excited to get going and looking to negotiate and build up to big fights before the year is out."
‘Del Boy’ last fought in May, a split decision defeat to Joseph Parker in Manchester. The pair are set for a rematch at the same venue on December 18th.
