Dustin Johnson leads the 2018 US Open by four shots at the half-way stage, while a host of high-profile names missed the cut at Shinnecock Hills in New York state.
Johnson, the World No.1, carded a three-under 67 which took his overall score to an extremely impressive -4, meaning he’s the only player in the field under-par as we venture into day 3.
It’s been a stupendous showing of golf so far from Johnson who is currently bidding to win the tournament for the second time in three years following his success in 2016.
Johnson’s closest challengers are fellow Americans Scott Piercy and Charlie Hoffman who are both level-par, while the English trio of Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Ian Poulter are all a further one shot back, alongside defending US Open champion Brooks Koepka and Swedish star Henrik Stenson.
Fleetwood scored the joint-lowest round of the week, 66, to move into contention, but for Poulter it was a decent majority-of-the-day followed by a shambolic finish. For 16 holes the Englishman looked in great nick, however he had a stinker on his penultimate hole, dropping three shots, and then he bogeyed the last.
As you’d expect, he was fuming, but after collecting his thoughts he said:
"If you had offered me one over and tied fourth at the start of the week I would have taken it."
But the second major of the year has produced a handful of big-time casualties as the likes of Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, Jason Day, Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm all miss out on the weekend’s action.
The last time @DJohnsonPGA shot back-to-back rounds in the 60s at a major was the 2016 #USOpen.
His finish that week ... 🏆
