Emma Raducanu Splits With Coach Dmitriy Tursonov But Appoints Fitness Guru Green

The 19-year-old is on the hunt for her fifth coach in the space of 15 months

Emma Raducanu is on the lookout for her fifth coach in the space of 15 months as Dmitry Tursonov has decided to leave and pursue other opportunities.

The duo seemed like they were building a strong partnership as Raducanu won eight out of the 15 matches she played working with the Russian tutor. His split with the young tennis star sees him follow in the footsteps of Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson and Torben Beltz, who have mentored Raducanu over the past year and a bit.

It has been reported that, unlike previous departures, the 19-year-old wished to continue working with Tursonov but his decision to move on may have been made in light of the short-term relationships his predecessors had with the young Brit.

Raducanu has received criticism for constantly swapping coaches and it has seen her struggle to build on her miraculous women’s singles crown at the US Open last year in New York as she has experienced inconsistent results in 2022. Upon her return to Flushing Meadows last month, Raducanu bowed out in the first round against Alize Cornet.

The British number one is currently recuperating from a wrist injury which saw her pull out of the Transylvania Open this month. She is aiming to be ready in time for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Glasgow next month.

But as one door closes another one opens. Despite losing Tursonov, Raducanu has added Jez Green, the physical trainer who worked with Andy Murray, to her team. This is in the hope of Green training her in a way that will make her less prone to injuries in the future, while improving her fitness on court.

Green assisted Murray during the period when he won the men’s singles titles at the US Open, Wimbledon and the London Olympic Games. He has since aided Tomas Berdych, Alex Zverev and Karolina Pliskova.

The 50-year-old is one of the most respected on the tennis circuit in his line of work, and Raducanu will hope that he can shape her into someone who can withstand the demands of the tour.

When last year’s Wimbledon finalist Pliskova underwent a training block with Green, she described it as ‘life-changing’.

Green has developed his ideas over 20 years working on the tours and bases his approach on factors beyond just building up strength and fitness.
