Two men have spoken out about England cricketer Ben Stokes, claiming he was defending them from homophobic abuse when he was arrested in Bristol last month.

The 26-year old was arrested after causing actual bodily harm in the early hours of the 26th September outside a Bristol nightclub.

The two men, Kai Barry and Billy O'Connell, told the Sun newspaper that Stokes was, in fact, protecting them from abuse.

In the article, the two men claim they were being verbally abused for their sexuality by a group of men, before Stokes stepped in and assaulted the attackers.

Stokes was suspended by England in September following the release of the video which showed the assault. Police have now spoken to both men and it remains to be seen whether Stokes will play a part in the upcoming Ashes series.

England play their opening test in Brisbane on the 23rd of November.
