Gareth Southgate has named his 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup and although not entirely universal, the response from critics and supporters has been on the whole positive.
Gone are the days of the 'Golden Generation' that flattered to deceive at major championships and there's much more of a general acceptance that the squad is limited and won't be going all the way and lifting the World Cup in Moscow in July.
That said, supporters will be expecting more from the players that was served up in Euro 2016, Roy Hodgson's hotch-potch of a team stifled by negativity bowing out in the second round to Iceland.
This is a young and pretty inexperienced squad, but one with plenty of pace and if Gareth Southgate can keep things simple (signs suggest he will) and play to the team's strengths this team could reach the quarter finals and give something for the England supporters to cheer about.
This squad lacks caps but all bar one of the 23 have come through the ranks as an England player. Jamie Vardy the only player in the squad who didn't represent England at youth level and Harry Maguire the only player plus his Leicester teammate who hasn't represented England at multiple youth levels. Maguire played a single game for the U21's but the likes of Jack Butland, Harry Kane and Dele Ali to name just a few have been in the England ranks in some form for years and years.
Whilst there's hope for England fans, the way the National team announced the squad was novel and innovative, with a film containing children from lots of different backgrounds listing the players who had been selected.
It wasn't long before the players themselves took to social media to share their excitement for the upcoming World Cup and we've selected some of the best.
Kyle Walker's tweet was probably the pick.
The Manchester City full-back could be plying his trade in a back three at the World Cup but it looks as though he missed the call from his national team manager. You have to presume he waited for the official nod before tweeting this witty post.
Walker's former teammate Harry Kane tweeted "Can't wait for my first World Cup. Excited to meet up with the lads and get started." Whilst Dele Alli tweeted: "It's an honour to be named in the England squad for the World Cup. It's a dream come true! Get me to Russia!!"
Ashley Young is one of the older statesmen in the team but the Manchester United full-back come winger put up a fantastic tweet containing a picture of his as a young child in an England kit.
Young's teammate at United Marcus Rashford will be making his first trip to a World Cup and he decided to take to Twitter to pay tribute to his Mother - After years of you standing on the touch line in the cold and rain, Mum we're off to the World Cup!
The Best of the rest
Jack Butland took to Instagram - Every call up is an honour, but a world cup call up is something extra special! i’ve always dreamt of this moment and can’t wait for the next couple of months ππΌπͺπΌ let’s go England.
Kieran Trippier on Twitter - An honour to be named in the England squad. Can't wait for my first World Cup and to meet up with the lads. We will give it our all.
Raheem Sterling tweeted - Amazing feeling to be named in the England squad, for this summers World Cup in Russia!!
Leicester's Harry Maguire tweeted - 2 years ago watching England in France with my mates. Now on the plane to Russia. How things have changed.
Danny Welbeck got in on the act - Privilege and an honour to be selected for England to go to the World Cup in Russia!! Cannot wait to get out there and do the fans proud! Let’s do this!!
Jamie Vardy - What an honour! No words to describe the feeling right now..... Can’t wait to get going! See you in Russia.
Youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold was one of the surprise inclusions - Dreamt of going to a World Cup since I was a kid. Today that dream come true, an honour to represent the 3 Lions this summer!
