Manchester United say they will bring in an interim manager to guide them through till the end of the season following the sacking of Jose Mourinho today.

Michael Carrick has been put in temporary charge for 48 hours and the club will make an external appointment. The club says the candidate needs to be mindful of its principles and steeped in its history.

With the fans despondent about the club slipping further behind the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, the club could do worse than turn to a man who even refuses to believe he's human. "I am not a man... I am Cantona."

Yes, it's a line from the brilliant film Looking For Eric but how the United faithful would love to see the King return to the club, even if it was only for a few months. A man who thrives on adoration with clear footballing beliefs and is loved by the fans who continue to sing his name at every games all these years since he left the club.

Cantona has distanced himself from managerial roles in the past but has never hid his desire to come back to Manchester. He joined the club from Leeds in 1992 and became one of the Premier League's all-time greats, inspiring the club to multiple trophies and regularly named as one of the club's best ever.

Interviewed recently, Cantona stated that he prefers watching Pep Guardiola's Manchester City and the style of football played under Mourinho was not to his liking.

"It's not the right man for the right woman," said Cantona of Mourinho's relationship with United, as reported by Republik of Mancunia in October. "You can lose games but you take risks. You lose against Juventus and they have 70% possession of the ball at Old Trafford. Could you imagine that with Ferguson on the bench? I suffer and I suffer even more when I see [Manchester City] play so wonderfully.

"At United, they never give a chance to a player who knows the club from the inside, who knows the identity and philosophy of the club," he said.

"I don't want people to think I'm saying this because I want to be manager of Manchester United. It's just the truth. "[Ryan] Giggs? Any player who wants to be the manager they should give them the chance."
