Exeter Chiefs Run Riot Plus The Rest Of The Action From The Anglo-Welsh Cup

Exeter Chiefs showed their class by destroying Scarlets 40-0 in the second round of the Anglo-Welsh Cup on Sunday.

It was highly impressive stuff from Rob Baxter's side as they reduced their Welsh hosts to rubble and claim their second victory in the competition they won in 2014.

In the first half both Shaun Malton and James Freeman muscled their way over from short range against a youthful Scarlets side.

After the break, the reigning Premiership champions moved through the gears in devastating fashion.

Three times referee Karl Dickson went under the posts to award a penalty try as the Chiefs scrum marched inexorably towards the line.

There was also time for replacement Tom Hendrickson to go over under the posts, much to the delight of coach Ricky Pellow.

Pellow said: “To get a bonus point win here in Wales is great to start with. We had to fight really hard for it, it didn’t just happen.

“Scrum dominance got us the bonus point but it took a long period of time before we could get points on the board so all credit to Scarlets.”

Harlequins are level on points with Exeter in Pool Two after a high-scoring 45-37 home win over Worcester.

Tim Visser, Mat Luamanu, Harry Sloan, James Chisholm, Dino Lamb, Alofa Alofa and James Lang scored tries for Quins, with Lang converting five of them.

Dean Hammond scored three tries for Worcester, Max Stelling, Darren Barry and Ben Howard one each with Sam Olver converting two and kicking a penalty.

Newcastle Falcons lie top of Pool Four after hammering Cardiff Blues 57-0 at Kingston Park on Saturday, with Samoan winger Sinoti Sinoti scoring twice.

He was joined on the scoresheet by fellow flyer Adam Radwan, scrum-half Micky Young, Mark Wilson, Alex Tait, Joel Hodgson and Gary Graham.

Gloucester wreaked havoc at home to London Irish, thumping the Exiles 47-7 at Kingsholm to claim their first win in this season’s competition.

The Cherry and Whites ran in seven tries after opting to field a strong side to keep in touch with Bath and Wasps in Pool One.

The hosts selected a strong and experienced side at Kingsholm and it paid off, even though they had to wait more than 20 minutes for the first points of the match.

Scrum-half Willi Heinz got the breakthrough and the hosts scored two further first-half tries through Val Rapava Ruskin and Tom Hudson.

Irish got one back after the break through Ollie Hoskins but Gloucester found another gear again towards the end of the match as Jeremy Thrush, Henry Trinder, Callum Braley and Jake Polledri all crossed.

Northampton beat Scarlets 41-7 to notch up their first Anglo-Welsh Cup victory of the season and arrest a run of five defeats in all competitions.

Saints led 12-0 at the break, with first Juan Pablo Estelles scoring his second try in as many weeks in the competition before hooker Reece Marshall scored his first points in a Saints shirt.

But after the break Northampton clicked through the gears; Ken Pisi kicked things off as he picked off a loose pass and scored himself.

The lightning-fast Cobus Reinach added another from Michael Paterson’s offload, Tom Wood was set up by Harry Mallinder’s brilliant run down the left, and Alex Mitchell rounded things off after Ben Nutley’s powerful drive.

Friday night's games saw Wasps won 36-12 at Ospreys and Bath overcome Leicester 33-31 while Saracens lost 29-22 at Sale.
