Falcons’ Matt Ryan Becomes Highest Paid NFL Player In History
16:45, 04 May 2018

Just two months after Minnesota Vikings made free agent QB Kirk Cousins the highest paid player in the long history of the NFL, Atlanta one-upped them in extending the contract of their quarterback, Matt Ryan.

With the contract he signed in 2013 due to expire at the end of 2018, Ryan, 32, will now enter his 11th season with the Falcons with an extension until 2023 worth $150 million, $100 million of which is guaranteed.

The Boston College product was chosen third overall by the Falcons in the 2008 Draft and has since established himself as one of the finest at his position. Ryan has thrown for 41,796 yards during his career with 260 yards and 126 interceptions while completing nearly 65 percent of his passes, holding the franchise record in nearly every major career passing category.

He won the NFL Most Valuable Player award in 2016 and has been to four Pro Bowls, the NFL’s annual all-star game and last season became the fastest quarterback to throw for over 40,000 yards (151 games), surpassing Drew Brees’ record by one game and overtook Peyton Manning for most passing yards through 10 seasons (41,796).

Nicknamed ‘Matty Ice’ for his coolness under pressure, he has 26 fourth-quarter comebacks to his name, tied with the legendary Joe Montana. Unlike Montana, who was 4-0 in Super Bowls, Ryan was on the losing side despite leading 28-3 against New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI.

Don’t expect Ryan to remain the highest paid player for long, Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers will be the next QB to cash in when the Packers sort out his extension in the coming weeks.
