This midweek we had Carabao Cup action to tie us over until Saturday rolls around. With that said, nothing beats being slumped in front of your television watching the 3pm kick-offs with Jeff and the boys. For us FPL managers, we’re also repeatedly refreshing our app to see how many points we’ve scored in the midst of the action.
Last week was a pretty high-scoring affair, with the average sitting at a huge 58 points. Personally, I scored 61 and somehow I still had red downward arrows all over the show! I hope you guys fared better, but anyway, here goes our three footballers to buy and three players that you may want to ditch…
Three players to buy
Jamaal Lascelles – Newcastle United - £4.6m
Jamaal Lascelles has been a privilege to watch over the last couple of gameweeks. He’s a young, talented defender who just enjoys playing the game. The Englishman has become the leader at the back for Newcastle United, and he’s even popped up with a couple of all-important goals for his side.
He’s amongst the top high scoring defenders in FPL this year, and at £4.6million, the 23-year-old is an absolute steal. He may not start every week for you, but during GW6, Newcastle takes on Brighton. Lascelles well worth the gamble and he has low ownership which is always a plus.
Mohamed Salah – Liverpool - £9.2m
Personally, I have a love-hate relationship with Mo Salah and I feel like he’s already been in and out of my team a bunch. I was on the fence about his style of play in the Premier League, but I’ve made my final decision and I think he’s going to be superb for Liverpool.
In Mane’s absence, the onus is on the Egyptian to shine, and at £9.2m he could be a great, long-term replacement for the aforementioned Senegal star who is currently out through suspension. He does have a high ownership at 33%, but you could find yourselves left behind if you don’t have him in your squad.
Sergio Aguero – Manchester City - £11.6m
The Argentine started the season slowly, but he’s more than making up for it now. Out of absolutely nowhere, he’s surpassed Romelu Lukaku as the highest scoring attacker in the FPL with 34 points. He’s also £0.1 cheaper than his Belgian counterpart.
If you can somehow work both of the star strikers into the same team then you could be onto a winner. But, if you were forcing me to choose one, I’d go for the Manchester City star, purely because his ownership is way less at 20%. I also like the look of the Citizens’ upcoming fixtures, they have Palace up next.
Three players to wave goodbye to
David Luiz – Chelsea FC - £6.0million
This one was a pretty standard pick. David Luiz now faces a ban until mid-October, and £6.5million is just too much money to have sitting on your bench. It’s a shame because he’s made a good start to the season, amassing 21 points in five outings.
It’s no surprise that a huge 258k FPL managers have sold the Brazilian already, but he still has 20% ownership amongst bosses, and I’d be so surprised if that doesn’t continue to drop before the 11:30 GMT deadline on Saturday.
Alexandre Lacazette – Arsenal - £10.3million
I think it’s fair to say that Alex Lacazette has been largely underwhelming. The Frenchman came in with a hefty price-tag in both real life and Fantasy Football. He hasn’t lived up to expectations so far; scoring twice in five games isn’t the kind of return that you’d expect.
At £10.3m, there is so much value for money elsewhere, with the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Alvaro Morata priced similarly. His 10.9% ownership is an indicator of some poor form, with that figure consistently dropping with each passing gameweek. All you need to know is that it spells trouble when Danny Welbeck is in front of you in the pecking order…
Manolo Gabbiadini – Southampton - £6.9million
The former Napoli striker made a huge impression when he moved to Southampton in January, but he’s started this season poorly. So much so that he found himself on the bench last time out, and he’s only scored one goal this campaign.
It tells you a lot about Southampton that the Italian is still their highest scoring attacker with 14 points. His value has already dropped from the £7.0m that he started at, and I fully expect that trend to continue. Bin him off as soon as possible.
Well, there you have it folks. Another week of FPL is in the books and it feels as though we’re rapidly racing through this season. Good luck in your leagues, and hopefully our picks can help you out somewhat!
