Federico Chiesa Could Stay In Florence This Summer Despite Interest From Manchester City, Manchester United And Liverpool

It was a friendly encounter between two sides that really should’ve been on the way to Russia this summer. As Italy raced down the right flank during a friendly versus the Netherlands Juventus Stadium, 20-year-old Federico Chiesa put in a first-time cross to Simone Zaza, who gratefully responded with a goal.

A superb performance like this from Chiesa in only his fifth appearance for the senior Azzurri side only serve to demonstrate exactly why teams such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham, not to mention Juventus and Inter are all said to be interested in capturing his signature this summer.

Despite such fervent interest, Fiorentina – the club in which the winger has resided with since the age of 10 – have so far stood firm in their stance that their young star is simply not for sale, however it remains to be seen exactly how long they will be able to hold out.

“I think Chiesa is the best young player in Italy and that’s pretty obvious, as he proved it on international duty too,” Viola boss Stefano Pioli revealed Sky Italia.“I’d like to see him with us again for pre-season training, because the objective for Fiorentina is to improve the team. We Coaches are not in charge of the transfer strategy, so it’s not up to me and it’s difficult to make decisions when you reach certain sums, but the objective is to make the team better.

Federico – son of former Fiorentina striker Enrico Chiesa – has made 45 Serie A starts since making his debut in the opening match of the 2016/17 campaign away at Juventus. Since then, Viola supporters have seen some moments of true brilliance from the youngster, however it remains to be seen whether he will decide to move on.

While Fiorentina’s owners have proven that no player is truly unsellable in their attempts to render the club “self-financing”, Chiesa still has much to learn, and it seems that his family may want him to continue his journey in Tuscany for a little while longer yet. Some of the Viola youth product’s best moments have been spectacular, but the 20-year-old still lacks knowledge of when best to shoot and when to pass, and his current development with Pioli would benefit from at least another season.

His background with an ex-Italian international for a father means that perhaps the lure of a big contract elsewhere is not the only motivating factor in his career path, and this sensible advice might just mean that the winger stays put for another year.

“Next he must think about the national team,” declared Enrico Chiesa to Corriere dello Sport on June 3rd. “This is the most important thing. For him, it will bring great satisfaction. In terms of the rest, he has a contract, he’s content and happy - really happy. Therefore I think that it’s vital to think about the national team and from Monday to enjoy a month of vacation, because he deserves it, especially after a season that everyone knows has been hard, not just on the pitch.”

Whatever happens with this talented starlet this summer will not be a surprise, his raw talent enough to see him thrive at one of Europe’s biggest clubs, and his roots in Florence sufficient to keep him there for a little bit longer yet.
