Conor McGregor has hit back at former lightweight title challenger Dustin Poirier after the American suggested on Twitter that the two could meet in the Octagon for a second time.
After his third-round submission loss on Saturday night to Khabib Numagomedov, an emotional Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier attended the post-fight press conference, which he was so sure he’d attend with the lightweight belt in-hand.
The emotional 30-year-old said he “had to go home and think about what’s next.”
Well, he’s thought about it and as his tweet shows, he’s got his sights set on one man...
A fight between ‘Notorious’ and ‘The Diamond’ seems to make sense as Poirier currently sits second in the UFC’s lightweight ranking, one above McGregor.
The pair have fought before, with McGregor delivering a knockout inside 1 minute and 46 seconds, something he was quick to point out last night.
You should have spoke my name with a bit more respect in that build up. “McGregor's not next”
Motherfucker, it's McGregor always!
McGregor is the goal! Always!
Say that now and I'll think about it.

Conor McGregor’s ability to trash talk opponents clearly hasn’t suffered during his time away from the Octagon, as he continues to assert that he’s the best in the division.
It looks like a fight between the two could be on if UFC president Dana White tells McGregor he needs to build his way back up to a potential title fight against Khabib, who he lost to in 2018 via submission.
Fan favourite Ben Askren also added his opinion on the matter - as usual - and continued his tirade against the Irishman with reasons why he should take the fight over another title scrap with Khabib.
There’s no doubt that McGregor will return but can he do it on his own terms? Whatever happens, let’s enjoy the ride.
