It would take some serious research to find out which family in world football can claim to have the most professional footballers.
One who may well lay claim to that record hail from Scandinavia and include a household name fondly remembered on these shores for his goalscoring exploits.
The most famous of the Flos from a UK standpoint is Tore Andre, who, between 1997 and 2009, earned his crust with Chelsea, Rangers and Sunderland, Leeds and MK Dons (with a two-year sojourn in the middle in Italy with Sienna and Valerenga in his native Norway.)
‘Flonaldo’ had successful spells at Chelsea (where he won both the FA and League Cup as well as the Cup Winners Cup) and Rangers, where he scored the winning goal in the in a 4-0 demolition of Ayr United in the Scottish League Cup final.
He now runs his own football academy in Berkshire.
His older brother Jostein also had a spell in England with Sheffield United and their cousin Havard played for Wolves.
But it was in their native Norway that they dominated with no less than seven of the Flo’s to date having played in the top flight – the Tippeligaen.
Four brothers – Jostein, Tore Andre, Kjell Rune & Jarle have all played professionally in Norway while Kjell’s son, Ulrik plays for Fredrikstad FK.
Havard’s son, Per-Egil Flo, also played in Norway (winning the title with Molde in 2014 – amazingly the only Flo to achieve the feat) and now plays in the Czech Republic with Slavia Prague.
The Flo’s hail from the village of Stryn in central Norway and boast 160 international caps between them. Surely no family in football can boast as many professional players at such a high level?
While there are more famous footballing families in global football it is doubtful that there are any who have produced the volume of professional players that the Flo’s have. And you wouldn’t bet against a few more turning up before they are done.
