Forget Manchester City, Juventus, And Boca: This Is The Football Documentary You Must See This Year

This year the football fan has been privileged with a host of stellar documentaries, featuring some of the world’s most recognisable teams.

Juventus produced a doc to follow their (successful) attempt to win their seventh straight Scudetto, Boca Juniors Confidential showed behind-the-scenes of the most successful club in Argentina, and Manchester City had their questionable series ‘All or Nothing’.

On this weekend of Remembrance Sunday, however, be certain to fit in yet another feature.

‘Brothers in Football’, from BT Sport, the channel’s own commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, follows the fascinating story of Corinthian FC.

Founded in the 1880s, the English amateur team were set up to be a side to match the then-great national Scotland set-up, and would go on to feature such brilliantly notable personalities as the first black player to play Association Football at international level Andrew Watson, and England top-scorer Charles 'Charlie Bam' Bambridge.

The side would take inspiration from and would go on to have close ties with SC Corinthians Paulista and Real Madrid.

A team honoured for its sportsmanship, the story of Corinthians is an extremely tragic one after having been scheduled to take a tour of Brazil in 1914, to face the club they had an inextricable bond with.

It was whilst they was on that voyage to South America that the team received news that conflict had broken out between the United Kingdom and the Central Powers, and the players decided ‘that there was more to life than sport’ and returned home to join the cause.

They would lose more men than any other football club in World War I.

The documentary goes onto to recount Paulista - now one of the richest clubs in Brazil - inviting the team that Corinthians would eventually merge with, Casuals FC, over a century later to finally play that game that was scheduled at the beginning of the 20th Century before being most cruelly interrupted.

An absolutely riveting story that should have been told more often, for any devoted football fanatic this is a must-watch.

Brothers in Football airs Saturday 10th November on BT Sport 1. You can watch the trailer at the bottom of this article, and also provide a donation to British service men and women injured in conflict using the link below.
