Forget Pochettino, Zidane, and Blanc This Is The Manager Manchester United Need

With Jose Mourinho’s departure from Manchester United, the managerial merry-go-round is undoubtedly going to start rotating more rampantly.

The Daily Express had already reported that Mourinho was to be offered a route out of Old Trafford in the form of his old club Internazionale, several days before the announcement from the Red Devils that the Portuguese had indeed left their club.

Inter president Massimo Moratti appointed Mourinho a decade ago at the San Siro and across two seasons the manager brought unparalleled success to the nerazzurri, enabling them to become the first Italian team to win the continental treble in 2009/10. Upon this achievement, Mourinho subsequently departed to Real Madrid.

Inter Milan is also explicitly the club that Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has assured that he will take charge of in the future, and as a result, we could be on the verge of witnessing an absolutely fascinating scrimmage as some of Europe’s elite clubs try to procure several of the most high-profile managers in the game, and Simeone’s talents could be perfectly suited to Manchester United.

Simeone currently sits at 33/1 in the running order to become the man to replace Mourinho, way behind some of the frontrunners including Mauricio Pochettino and Laurent Blanc.

However, those in the United hierarchy should seriously consider a manager extremely capable of bringing in astute purchases, imposing a strict work ethic into the starting line, and inspiring passion. Importantly, he is a man proven of getting results and competing on the grand stage, with a name to attract talent.

A United team under Simeone wouldn’t have to strive to be a Liverpool or Manchester City in terms of unrelenting attacking prestige, but can demonstrate cohesion, unity, and devotion.

In his seven years at Atletico, Simeone broke the duopoly of Barcelona and Real Madrid, winning their first La Liga title in 18 years whilst simultaneously leading them to the Champions League Final in the season. A brace of Europa League titles have also been forthcoming, and the man himself has been rewarded with  three La Liga Coach of the Year awards.

The 48-year-old has recently asserted his preference to return to the club he spent two years at at the end of the last century.

“I have told Inter already 2,000 times, it will happen,”

Simeone told Radio Anchi'o, as cited by Diario AS (Football Espana).

“I will continue to work day by day with piece of mind, I have one year left of my contract here and at the moment we are working very well.

“I hope to continue on the same path that we have worked on for the last 12 or 13 years, my style is in accordance with the club.

“This club has a personality like many others – Juventus, Barcelona, Athletic Club Bilbao – so you have to get the players and personalities around that, they are who are important.”

Simeone officially signed a two-year extension last November, and though a further contract extension was mooted two months ago hasn't been confirmed, and it should be with good grace that Atletico should let the Argentine depart.

Following Mourinho’s sacking, Atletico Madrid boss Simeone has now reportedly become the second highest paid manager in the world, having earned €22 million over the course of last year’s campaign, and now behind only China national team coach Marcello Lippi.

Current Inter manager Luciano Spalletti signed a new contract at the beginning of the season but only makes around €4.5 million per season. (Fedenerazzurra)

Despite the new salary increase, the Inter coach is only third in Serie A in terms of highest salary after Carlo Ancelotti of Napoli (€6 million) and Massimiliano Allegri of Juventus (€7 million).

If Simeone’s intention to leave Atletico isn’t limited to a move to Inter, as well as procuring a salary befitting the one he is currently earning in Madrid, Manchester United shouldn’t offer any hesitation in acquiring the talented manager who can provide the stability and vision that the Red Devils so desperately need.
