They said he had lost it. They said he wouldn’t fit into Pep Guardiola’s regime.

Once again, this weekend Sergio Agüero proved the critics wrong with another sensational display against Chelsea to re-assert, once again, Manchester City’s credentials to be Premier League champions.

It had threatened to go all Pete Tong early on for the Argentinian forward after he missed the most astonishing cross-goal sitter provided by teammate Bernardo Silva, before he grabbed the game by the balls with an out-of-this-world strike past Kepa Arrizabalaga for his opening goal.

Agüero scored his second just six minutes later and then complete his hattrick after a penalty was awarded by referee Mike Dean, allowing him to top the current season’s Premier League top-goalscorers list alongside Liverpool’s Mo Salah.

Since the New Year, Agüero has scored six goals - two more than any other player in the English top tier.

Incredibly, Sergio Agüero now has more league goals at home this season (14) than Leicester City, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town.

He’s also surpassed the legendary Thierry Henry as having bagged the most hat tricks at a single ground, Aguero having taken his to nine past the fantastic Frenchman’s eight.

He also has the most Premier League hat-tricks of all-time, with 11, equalling Alan Shearer, and two more than Liverpool great Robbie Fowler.

What’s even more startling, Sergio Agüero has become just the fifth player to score hat-tricks in consecutive home Premier League games.

It’s been eight-and-a-half years since the last player to do it, a forward who featured prominently for the side City and Agüero vanquished this gameweek; Didier Drogba in August 2010.

The 30-year-old Agüero has become just the sixth player in the competition's history to register 200 goal involvements for a single club in the competition, after Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs (both Manchester United), Thierry Henry (Arsenal), Frank Lampard (Chelsea) and Steven Gerrard (Liverpool).

Agüero can help City collect their - and his - fourth Premier League title this season and few would bet against the Blues - and their brilliant forward - when they’re in this swashbuckling form.

The best Premier League striker of all time? Agree or disagree but one thing’s for certain, Agüero likes to suggest it time and time again whenever he takes to the pitch in City blue.
