Dundee have become the latest Scottish Premier League club to axe their manager following the departure of Neil McCann on Wednesday.
McCann is the third victim of the SPL Sack Race after the departures of Kenny Miller (Livingston) and Alan Stubbs (St Mirren), having overseen a sorry start to the new season, leaving Dundee rock-bottom of the table with three points from a possible 24.
Jim Jefferies, the sporting director at League Two leaders Edinburgh City, was previously in talks with the club over the weekend about a role as assistant manager - prior to McCann’s exit - but an agreement could not be made.
Attention has now immediately turned to the main contenders in the mix for the newest SPL vacancy, and there’s a surprise name at the top of the betting in the former Scotland and Celtic boss Gordon Strachan who has been out-of-work for a year.
Strachan is currently priced at 6/4 in the betting, alongside the unemployed former Dundee United striker Jim McIntyre, in the latest odds via The Sack Race.
Strachan’s four-year reign in charge of Scotland came to an end last October following the Tartan Army’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
The Scot previously spent a year at Middlesbrough where he won only 13 of his 46 games, however he enjoyed more success at Celtic, leading the Scottish giants to three consecutive titles, a couple of League Cups and a Scottish Cup triumph, before resigning after Rangers won the league.
Strachan, who also managed in the Premier League with Coventry and Southampton, could now be set to return to where it all began, having started his professional football career at Dundee back in 1974.
Although his wage demands could well scupper what would be a remarkable return to The Dee.
Other names in the frame at this early stage include the aforementioned duo of Miller and Stubbs, while Ian McCall, Barry Smith and Archie Knox all feature, and Fabrizio Ravanelli is a 33/1 shot.
