Former Celtic attacking midfielder Kris Commons has launched a scathing attack on the recruitment at the Scottish champions, after they exited the Champions League earlier this week, as they fell 3-2 on aggregate to AEK Athens in the third qualifying round.
A 2-1 defeat in Greece saw Brendan Rodgers' side crash out of the marquee European event, and they will now have to try and qualify for the Europa League, but Commons was quick to push the blame on to the lack of new faces at the club, and feels that the current squad is not up for the job.
Rodgers suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time in his Celtic managerial career on Tuesday night, as the defeat in Athens followed on from a 1-0 defeat to Hearts last weekend, and they will now have to travel to Partick Thistle in the Scottish League Cup to try and break that uncharacteristic run of losses.
While Rodgers has already aired his frustrations of not being able to bring quality into the football club, Commons went a whole lot further in his vitriol towards a side he made over 150 appearances for by saying to BBC Scotland, "Whoever is in control of bringing in players needs to have a look at themselves as the quality is not good enough."
It's reported that since May 2016 Celtic have spent £25m in the transfer market, but Commons feels it's the personnel that has been brought in, and questioned the current head of recruitment Lee Congerton, who took up that role in March 2017.
"He's had the funds to get good players but they're not making any impact on the side. He has three or four that pass the mark - Scott Sinclair, Odsonne Edouard, Moussa Dembele and Olivier Ntcham," added Commons.
"Everyone says he's been crying out for defenders, but he signed two goalkeepers in Dorus de Vries and Scott Bain, two centre-halves in Marvin Compper and Jack Hendry, right-back Cristian Gamboa, he's just re-signed Emilio Izaguirre," concluded Commons.
