John Terry is dipping his toe into the world of management having been given the position of assistant head coach by new Aston Villa boss Dean Smith, but the former Chelsea defender, who spent a year at Villa Park before hanging up his boots, has spoken candidly about what is role will be at the Championship club.
Ready to learn from Smith, who joined from Brentford last week, Terry has indicated that he will be ready to offer his views to Smith, but has guaranteed that the new Villa boss will have the final say on all matters.
Speaking to the club's website, Terry said, "It's not just being yes men, it's about giving our opinion and ultimately Dean will make the final decision and rightly so. But it's down to us (Terry will be alongside Richard O'Kelly as Smith's assistants) to push and question where we can and give our ideas and thoughts, whether that'll be on the training field or in the dressing room and we will pass it on, but like we said ultimately the gaffer will make that final decision."
Terry has also spoken about his personal plan to get into management and unlike his old teammate Frank Lampard, Terry is ready to learn from Smith at Villa before going into the deep end from a managerial perspective.
The 37-year-old said: "I have aspirations to be a manager one day," "But that is in four or five years - I'm nowhere near the finished article."
"If anything it is more intimidating for me. I want to learn from him," concluded Terry.
