Former Blades boss Nigel Adkins has said he believes Sheffield United will be promoted to the Premier League this season after Chris Wilder’s men defeated his Hull side 1-0 at Bramall Lane.

That victory was United’s fourth in a row and put them top of the Championship table heading into the international break,. Adkins clearly fancies their chances of promotion as he said: “We had three close games. Middlesbrough who we drew with, Leeds United on Tuesday, and Sheffield United. They are three teams who I think will get promoted this season. Three good sides.

“Why those three? The three teams all play different ways and it shows there’s different ways to play football and win games. Middlesbrough are well equipped in what they go and do. Leeds, whether they can keep everyone fit is the other side of it, but some of the football they play is really good. And Sheffield United are now well equipped. They have an excellent manager, an excellent group of players and are going to be able to deal with injuries.”

United have bounced back from losing their first two games of the season and have now won eight of their last ten league games. Local lad Billy Sharp is the spearhead of their attack and with seven goals already this season, the Championship Golden Boot is well within his reach.

Having averaged over 24,000 fans at home games this season, Adkins also believe the fans can play a massive part in the promotion push:

“They have got a real passionate support who will get behind them. Sheffield United have suffered over the past few years, but they are on the up now and it’s only a matter of time before they are back in the Premier League.”
